How Connected RewardsSM works
When you participate in Connected Rewards, you agree to let BGE make brief, limited adjustments of up to 4 degrees on your thermostat during periods when electricity use is at its highest. These periods are called “adjustment events” and they typically occur on weekday afternoons from May through October. Watch this video to learn more about adjustment events:
Before the event begins, your thermostat’s temperature may be lowered a few degrees to keep your home cool and comfortable when the actual event begins. At the start of an adjustment event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted up to 4 degrees above its regular setpoint to help reduce electric demand during the hottest part of the day. Adjustment events typically last no more than six hours. Once the adjustment event is over, your thermostat will return to its normal setpoint and/or schedule.
Depending on your thermostat provider, notifications may appear on the thermostat screen or in your web/mobile application.
In some cases, your thermostat may be adjusted up to 3 degrees cooler prior to an adjustment event to ensure the temperature of your home stays comfortable during the event. If you adjust your thermostat and opt out of precooling, this will automatically opt you out of the adjustment event as well.
Adjustment events will only affect the temperature in your home by a few degrees with minimal impact on comfort. Simple steps like closing blinds or drapes on the sunny side of your home, using ceiling fans in the room you’re in and making sure your vents aren’t blocked by rugs or furniture can help keep your home comfortable. There may be times when you want to opt out of an adjustment event — for example, when you have guests or if there has been a change in your daily schedule. Your participation in Connected Rewards is voluntary, and you will always retain control of your thermostat functions.
If you need to opt out of an adjustment event, you can do so by changing the temperature on your thermostat from your mobile device, web browser or the thermostat itself. You will receive a pop-up message to confirm you would like to opt out of the event. Depending on your thermostat manufacturer, you can also opt out by clicking “Learn More” on the notification on your app or device and by navigating to the opt-out experience from there.
Opting out of an adjustment event will not automatically unenroll you from the Connected Rewards program. We do ask that you participate in the majority of adjustment events throughout the summer in order to do your part to ease the burden on Maryland’s electricity grid during peak events and receive your Connected Rewards incentive at the end of each summer.
