PeakRewardsSM Electric Water Heater Program
The PeakRewards Electric Water Heater program helps you conserve energy — and save money — during times of high energy demand. Plus, participants receive $25 in BGE bill credits each winter, paid in four equal monthly installments of $6.25 from November through February.
As of April 1, 2020, the PeakRewards Electric Water Heater program will no longer accept new participants. Additionally, the program will be discontinued February 2021, and participants will no longer receive bill credits.

How does it work?
During designated periods of peak energy demand, BGE will turn off the electricity to participants’ electric water heaters using a switch installed near the unit. The water heater will not produce any additional hot water for the duration of the event. However, water in the tank should remain warm and available for use.
These “cycling events” typically occur on weekdays (6am – 9am and 6pm – 9pm) during the winter (November – February) and from 12pm – 8pm in the summer months (June – September), but can happen during other times throughout the year.
By participating in PeakRewards, you are taking a smart and easy step to:
- Ease the burden on our existing electricity delivery system and reduce the need for additional power plants
- Protect our environment by lowering power plant emissions to reduce our carbon footprint
- Take advantage of energy-saving solutions brought to you by EmPOWER Maryland
