Open the access panel on the side to check for a tiny blue flame. This is called a pilot light.

Does your water heater have a pilot light?

Yes

Check the top of the heater.

Still not sure? Here are some other ways to check:

  • Look for a gas pipe. If your water heater has a ½-inch thick black pipe going into the bottom of the tank, it’s gas-powered.
  • Look for two thermostats. If your water heater has both an upper thermostat and a lower thermostat (these are sometimes hidden behind a panel), it’s electric.
