How It Works
When you enroll, you’ll select your cycling level: 50%, 75% or 100%. Your cycling level is related to the amount of time your air conditioner cycles during an emergency cycling event. The higher your cycling level, the more bill credits you can receive.
As a PeakRewards Smart Thermostat program participant, you are guaranteed to receive your monthly PeakRewards credit (June-September).
TWO WAYS TO SAVE
BGE schedules Energy Savings Days when the demand for electricity is expected to be particularly high. These events are voluntary and, if you choose to participate by reducing your electricity usage, you can earn a bill credit of $1.25 for every kilowatt-hour saved compared to your typical usage. There could be up to 6 Energy Savings Days each summer. If you participate in both Energy Savings Days and the PeakRewards Program, you will receive whichever credit is higher during your billing period.
What is Cycling?
During Energy Savings Days your air conditioning will be cycled up to 50% on and off. You have the ability to override up to two Energy Savings Days, if cycling that day isn't convenient for you! Overrides can be scheduled in advance by calling the PeakRewards hotline at 1-855-231-5501 or during an event, right from your Wi-Fi Thermostat! Expand for more information However, if an emergency event is called on an Energy Savings day, you will be cycled to your chosen participation level and any scheduled overrides will be canceled. Learn how PeakRewards and Energy Savings Days offer you two ways to save.
When regional demand for electricity is close to surpassing supply, BGE may be required by PJM, the Regional Transmission Operator for the Mid-Atlantic region, to activate an emergency cycling event. During an emergency event, your Wi-Fi thermostat may receive an emergency signal to cycle your air conditioner on and off, up to your selected cycling level. Because of the nature of emergency cycling events, you aren't able to override cycling during these events. On these days, your participation helps to avoid potential brownouts and rolling blackouts.
